WELCOME TO EGYPT!!!

By way of introduction, I'd like to tell you that I am a British expat who has lived here in Egypt for nearly five years. Prior to moving here I lived in the US for 15 years and have dual nationality. I have travelled extensively throughout Egypt, have contributed articles to local publications and I am also active on a number of informational web sites in Egypt.

I first visited Egypt as a tourist in 1996 and immediately fell in love with the country, its culture and its people - so much so that I returned several times before deciding to move here permanently in 1999, and I have had a wonderful time ever since! Egypt is a fascinating combination of ancient and modern, tradition and innovation, rich and poor, heart and soul… I’ve travelled quite a bit in my lifetime, but no country has ever fascinated, intrigued or entertained me as much!

Egypt is of course one of the world’s top tourist destinations and millions of people flock here every year to discover her ancient temples, tombs and treasures, explore her desert wilderness, bask on her golden beaches and dive in her crystal waters. However, I’ve found that many people come here not knowing very much about the essence of the country itself - its culture, customs and traditions - and can therefore find some aspects of their stay a little bit overwhelming… the crowds and teeming streets, the dust, noise and traffic, the Islamic culture and its social traditions, the language barrier, etc, etc. Having lived here a number of years now I of course find all of this quite normal, but I can really appreciate how much of a culture shock it can be for some people!

Because I love this country so much, I want everyone who comes here to experience the best of Egypt and enjoy its beauty and magic. This is one of the reasons I spend so much time on Egypt-related web sites sharing information on the country and culture. Through talking to and assisting so many people I realised that there was a great need for the type of personal guidance offered from the perspective of a westerner who lives here, to give people an insight into the country and its culture and explain some of the customs, traditions and characters you’ll encounter – in other words the real Egypt!
